On July 20, Ian Hartman, Ph.D., began his new role as director of the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) at UAA. Dr. Hartman offers expertise and experience in both research and leadership to this role. Joining UAA’s Department of History in 2011, he brings a comprehensive understanding of the institution, having worked as a classroom instructor and, more recently, in administrative roles within the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS).

A historian by training, Dr. Hartman earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His teaching has focused on the political and cultural history of the United States, while his research has covered race, power and politics in Alaska, the American West and the nation.
