Course content and LMS accessibility

Accessible course content helps ensure that all students can access and participate in learning materials, including those who use screen readers, captions, keyboard navigation, or other assistive technologies.

Use the guidance and resources below to help make your course materials accessible in learning management systems such as Blackboard and Canvas.

Creating accessible course content

Small design choices can make course materials easier for all students to read, navigate, and understand.

Use clear headings and structure

Organize course materials using headings and consistent formatting. Clear structure helps students navigate content and allows screen readers to interpret materials correctly.

Provide accessible documents

Course documents such as Word files, PDFs, and slides should follow accessibility best practices:

  • use headings and lists
  • add alt text to images
  • use readable fonts
  • ensure good color contrast

Caption video and transcribe audio content

Videos used in courses should include captions so students who are deaf or hard of hearing can access the content. Captions also benefit students learning in noisy environments or reviewing course material.

Write descriptive links

Link text should clearly describe where the link goes. Avoid vague phrases such as “click here” or “read more.”

Download the syllabus instead of Click here.

Use clear, readable language
Write instructions and course materials in plain language whenever possible. Clear language helps all students understand expectations and course content.
